Over 189.5 Houston / Dallas 8:05 ET 2 Units
Houston 84 Dallas 95 Lose
Houston's coming off a defensive masterpiece as they held the Hornets to just 66 points on Monday winning 86-66. Now the Rockets face a red hot Mavericks team that's trying desperately to stay out of the western conference cellar to avoid playing the Lakers in the first round. Meanwhile, Houston needs to win as they are in a neck and neck battle with the Spurs for their division. It's tough to put together back to back defensive performances like the one Houston put forth Monday so we expect a much looser game here tonight and the fact that this is such an important game to both teams gives us the added edge, if needed, of desperation fouling in the end as there will be no quit here.

Yes, Boston will be resting starters tonight. Yes, Philadelphia needs this game to move up a notch in seeding in the east. Yes, Boston was just humiliated in Cleveland on national TV on Easter Sunday by 31... but that's our point. The Celtics are once again playing on national TV (TNT 8:05 ET) and no matter what their starters' roles will be, Boston does not want to be beaten again in the spotlight. After all, they're the World Champs and have an image to uphold not to mention the negative effect a losing streak carries when heading into the playoffs. We look for the Celtics to be sharp tonight in all aspects of the game and expect them to win outright. We're not going to get greedy by playing the money line, we'll take the fat 6 points which gives us so many more ways to cash...

Portland -1 / LA Lakers 10:05 ET 2 Units
Portland 106 LA Lakers 98 Winner

What a difference 24 hours can make. The Lakers are going from playing a tired Nuggets team at home last night to playing a rested Portland team on the road tonight. LA went out to the early double digit lead last night only to squander it away and go to the half tied at 56. Then in the second half it was a back and forth affair until finally Denver collapsed just as expected (it's just a shame that they each didn't score a couple less buckets to keep the game under... a side & total sweep would have been nice). Tonight it's the Lakers turn to be one step behind. Portland is back home after a 4 game road trip (3-1 SU, 2-2 ATS), and have had a day to rest and host LA after they ran with Denver last night. The Blazers will crank up the "D" tonight which will tire the Lakers out even more than they already are. Portland is currently sitting towards the top of the playoff pile up in the west and would like to win tonight. No slacking here for the Blazers.

New Orleans +7 / Dallas 8:35 ET 1.25 Units
New Orleans 92 Dallas 100 Lose
The Hornets are in a 3 way battle with Utah and Dallas for the 6th, 7th & 8th seeds in the west with a chance of climbing even higher as only 4 games separate 7 teams in the west! The Mavs are coming off of back to back blowouts at home of Phoenix and Utah. You'll remember that we were on Dallas Sunday as they dismantled the Suns citing that Phoenix, despite getting yet another shot at possibly making the playoffs by beating the Mavs, are not playoff material this season with their run and gun style with no regard for defense. Don't look now but Dallas seems to be following suit. Even though they did blow the Suns out as we predicted, they also gave up 116, and before that game they gave up 107 to Memphis... MEMPHIS!Then Wednesday night they gave up 101 to the Jazz in a 130-101 rout. Yes, we had Utah in that game along with the under and lost both terribly, but we were expecting to catch the Mavs in a letdown spot after their big win over Phoenix, but unfortunately Utah's road woes continued. Tonight will be a different story as New Orleans rolls into town. A win here for the Hornets greatly improves their chances of catching San Antonio. They are currently 2 games back of the Spurs with 4 to play and the last game of the season for the Hornet is at SA which may very well mean something. We look for the Mavs' shooting to cool off tonight (57% avg L2 Games) as they play a team with a defense. Grab the fat 7 which is an inflated number due to the recent scoring explosions of Dallas. This game opened at 6 which we think was a high number to begin with. This is a very winnable game for New Orleans and the 7 points are a bonus.

Andrew Bynum returns tonight for the Lakers after an extended absence with a knee injury. More times than not, it takes time to get the system humming again. Just as LA had to learn how to play without Bynum (25-7 SU, 17-15 ATS without him), they must now re-learn how to play WITH him. Fortunately for LA, they are home tonight to face a tired Denver team playing their 4th game in 6 nights and fresh off a 10 point win at home last night against the Thunder (122-112). Meanwhile the Lakers had the night off so have a big advantage in the energy department. Many are giving the nod to Denver as far as motivation citing that they're trying to nail down the #2 seed in the west, but in reality they have a much better shot  doing so Monday at home against the Kings, but chances are they may not even have to as San Antonio may eliminate themselves by then as they have dates with Utah, GS & New Orleans to go. As for the Lakers' motivation, they would like to catch Cleveland for the bet record overall to clinch home court throughout. LA is 1 game back in the loss column.

So with Bynum's return, we feel the offensive smoothness of LA will be challenged just enough to limit their scoring to the 100-110 range while Denver will likely run out of gas down the stretch allowing for the LA cover... Predicted final: 106-93 LA...

After the big build-up to a very important game with Phoenix on Sunday and Dallas stepping up to squash any little hope that the Suns had of making the playoffs, Dallas can now revert back to the all around mess that they have become. The Mavs' fate is pretty much sealed: they'll be limping into the playoffs as the #8 seed in the west, but for Utah there's still alot of opportunity. The Jazz are currently 7th but there's only a 1 game difference in losses all the way up to the #4 spot and a win here is key as they still must play San Antonio & the Lakers on the road and GS & the Clippers at home. We feel Utah is peaking at the right and will wind up improving their playoff position.

Two of the leagues top playoff bound teams square off tonight in Houston in a game of somewhat importance as both teams jockey for playoff positioning. In the west, only four games separate six teams with the Rockets currently fourth,  and in the east Orlando is battling with Boston for the #2 seed as they both have 19 losses. As we've always said, good defense wins championships... at all levels of sports. And yes, 7.5 is a very fat number in such a big game but to play the dog with the thinking that they'll lose but cover is absurd. It's our opinion is that if you think Tom Izzo has his troops ready, take the 3:1 on the money line.  But for us, we like the Tar Heels to do what they've been doing to every opponent lately... Dominating!! North Carolina has rolled this tournament and will be cutting down the nets just before midnight tonight. They held Villinova to just 29 2nd half points and this was a team most thought had a legit shot at going all the way. UNC's defense was swarming in the 2nd half as they played like a team on a mission who simply won't be denied as they were last year getting blown out by Kansas in the Final Four (66-84). The Tar Heels have matured a great deal this past year and it'll be that maturity giving them the National Title in another decisive victory.

Dallas -3.5

Dallas 140 Phoenix 116 Winner
The Suns are amazingly still hanging around the hunt for the 8th spot in the west despite losing 3 of their last 5 thanks to Dallas also losing 3 of their last 5. So now the scenario is this: With 6 games to play, Phoenix is down 2 games and owns the tie breaker, so a win here is a must for the Suns because that would pull them to withing a game of winning the last spot where as a loss today would put the Suns 3 back with 5 to play which would really be 4 because now Dallas would own the tie breaker. So why are we playing Dallas here? Because as stated before, you don't win championships by averaging 122 ppg like the Suns have done over their last 10. Phoenix' shot to make the playoffs came and went on March 10th when they lost at home to these Mavs Going into that game the Suns had lost 4 in a row but were in a good position to make the playoffs with a win over Dallas but were outscored in the 3rd quarter 34-25 after leading at the half by 4 and so it went. Now there seems to be renewed hope (at least on paper) for the Suns but all business in the west will be settled in Dallas this afternoon.

Larry Brown has built this Bobcats team just as he built the Pistons: around defense. Charlotte may not make it very far in the playoffs (if they make it at all), but they have the sound fundamentals of a championship franchise on which to build upon. A playoff berth would be a great experience for this young Charlotte team and it is well within their reach with a win today. With 6 games to play, Detroit has a 2 game lead. A Charlotte win pulls them to within a game but they will still have to make up 2 games because Detroit owns the tie breakers. Having the knowledge of the Pistons that Coach Brown has is a huge advantage in such an important game.

Utah +2.5 / New Orleans 7:05 ET 2 Units
Utah 108 New Orleans 94 Winner
Both the Jazz and Hornets appear to have playoff spots secured as they're currently a game apart in the 6th and 7th spots in the west just above the Dallas/Phoenix battle, but there's plenty of motivation here as only 3 games separate 4th seed (Portland) and 7th seed (Utah)  This game features 2 of the best point guards in the game: Chris Paul & Deron Williams. But beyond the surface, the Jazz are a much deeper team and have had great success against New Orleans (10-2 SU & ATS L12). Also, Utah is a solid winning franchise with Jerry Sloan at the helm and you can be sure that he's not satisfied with a 7th seed.

This is Sloan's 21st season as the Jazz coach: the longest in all of pro sports. There is also a bit of a buzz around Utah lately with the recent announcement of Sloan's being elected into the Hall Of Fame along with former Jazz great John Stockton, Michael Jordan, and David Robinson.

Really hate to ask a bad team to win for us but this is the perfect go against spot for Dallas. The Mavs are coming off a tough battle with Miami on Wednesday where they managed to come away with yet another regular season victory over the Heat (98-96) extending that streak to 10. The Mavs' game before that was a 20 point blowout in Minnesota shooting 55% from the floor. We can't see Dallas getting excited at all tonight for Memphis, in fact we see them looking right past them as Dallas' remaining schedule is very tough: Phoenix, Utah, New Orleans, @ New Orleans, Minnesota, and Houston. Conserving energy for the stretch run is the likelier scenario as the Mavs are clinging to the 8th playoff spot in the west. Also note that Memphis has won it's last 2 and 3 of their last 4 (2 of them on the road).

Here's a situation where we feel one outcome is dependent on the other thus creating nice value: we're only risking 1 unit with the upside being 2.6 units. Orlando has had great success in the past of disrupting the offensive flow of the Cavs especially LeBron. So if Orlando is to win and cover here, it will be a defensive battle with points hard to come by.

Minnesota +13 / Utah 9:05 ET 1.5 units
Minnesota 103 Utah 102 Winner
Here's another look ahead spot for a team battling for a playoff spot. After tonight's ga with the T-Wolves, Utah goes on the road: @ New Orleans, @ Dallas, @ San Antonio, then home for Golden State & the Clippers, before finishing the regular season @ LA Lakers on the 14th. Utah is a game ahead of Dallas for the 7th & 8th playoffs spots in the west, so with such a tough remaining schedule, we can't see them putting forth the effort needed to cover such a big number.

Dallas' regular season winning streak against the Heat is nine games so to say Miami has the motivation is an understatement! In the middle of that 9 game regular season streak was the 2006 NBA Finals which gave the Heat the title as they beat Dallas 4 games to 2 after falling behind 2-0. That was young D-Wade's first (and only) championship but you gotta believe he's far from done. Tonight Miami is in the perfect spot to come into Dallas and snap the streak as the Mavs are playing their 3rd game in 4 nights and have travelled after each of their last 3 games: Sunday Dallas got blown out at Cleveland 74-102 then it was on to Minnesota where the Mavs blew out the Wolves 108-88 while shooting 55% from the floor. Meanwhile, the Heat played their last 2 games at home Saturday & Monday, so the extra rest here we believe will be the deciding factor.

We like the Heat here to win the game but are recommending taking the 5.5 points as this is a very large number for a tired team to cover and leaves us with so many more ways to win...

Alot has to do with scheduling. The Celtics have been on the move travelling after each of their last 10 games while the Hawks have been home since 3/07 (except for a quick trip to Cleveland on the 21st: 1 of their 2 losses L10). We'll back the surging Hawks at home here as Boston looks forward to returning home after tonight's game where they'll play 6 of their remaining 8 games to close out the season against mostly soft competition. Boston right now is more concerned with getting healthy for the playoffs above anything else.

Yes, this is the time of the season when playoff bound teams start preparing for the "second season" which usually involves concentrating more on defense, but looking past the surface here reveals reasons that big value exits on the over. First, understand that it takes alot of energy to play solid defense. Tonight we have two of the leagues elite teams playing their 6th game in 9 days (Boston) and 5th in 9 (Orlando). Also, each team has travelled after each of their last 9 games dating back to the beginning of the month which in itself is very tiring besides playing ball 2 out of every 3 nights. Orlando's last 2 games were a home and home against the Knicks (which the Magic won both including a come from behind win Monday 106-102). Boston held their last 3 opponents to: 77 (Clippers 3/23), 87 (Memphis 3/21), and 77 (San Antonio 3/20). That's no easy task and again, good defense drains a team. Tonight we expect a more wide open game with an offensive show for the national TV audience.

Utah +3 / Phoenix 10:35 ET 1.5 Units
Utah 114 Phoenix 118 Lose
The Suns struggling for a playoff spot but the truth of the matter is they're not playoff caliber... period. You don't win championships by scoring 126+ each game like they've been doing lately. Utah on the other hand has been playing very solid ball since the All Star Break winning 14 of 17. The Jazz' only problem has been the road where they're 14-20 on the season.  If Utah is to compete in the post season they know they must start winning away from home so tonight will be a good test as this is a very winnable spot for them having just soundly beat the Rockets last night. We look for Utah to feed off that win and come away with another victory in Phoenix tonight.

Also remember that value is created in the NBA by prolonged streaks and runs of teams that are very improbable to continue yet line adjustments are made taking into consideration these temporary phenomenons and the betting public continues to mistake them for permanent improvements or regressions. You can rest assured that the Suns will not continue winning by 16 ppg as they've averaged over their last 5 games and you can also be sure that the Jazz will not continue losing on the road they're too good of a team and are showing all the signs of catching fire down the stretch. We feel this game should be a pick so consider the 3 points a gift.

These 2 teams played in Orlando Saturday with the Magic winning 110-103 but failing to cover the hefty 12 point line. Orlando may very well be looking right past the Knicks tonight as they have Boston at home on Wednesday. This is a very winnable game for NY as they played well enough Saturday to win in Orlando. Also, tonight at the Garden, the Knicks will honor one player from each of the past six decades during halftime so there will be a certain air of greatness for this young Knicks team to feed off of in front of the home crowd. Before you assign too much value to the return of Greg Oden, understand that the Blazers have been doing just fine in his absence (9-5 SU). With the loss of a key player for a prolonged period, teams must learn how to win without them. Upon their return, the team must now relearn how to play with them. Greg Oden went down with a knee injury over a month ago and the Blazers managed to keep themselves together going 9-5. Oden returned last night and played about 12 minutes scoring 4 points as he got worked back into the system. Expect more of the same tonight (limited play), but the only difference is Portland is at Cleveland, not Indiana, and the Cavs will be ready to exploit any out of rhythm play as Portland gets used to Oden again.

Can't see Atlanta getting too excited to play Sacramento tonight as the Hawks have  Dallas on deck Thursday closing out their current 7 game home stand (5-0 SU & ATS so far) before travelling to Cleveland on Saturday to face the Cavs. Of course it's always tough to ask a bad team to win for you but in this case, it seems the Kings have been a nice little money maker lately. Despite being 3-12 SU in their last 15, Sacramento is 10-5 ATS over that span. Whenever you have a team not winning but covering alot, it's usually a sign overall improvement but it takes the linemaker a long time to adjust which seems to be the case here as Atlanta is laying a fat 12. Also note that the Hawks have averaged 50% shooting over their last 3 games so the inevitable off shooting night is expected which is why we're also on the under.
